Gone, just like that…

I recently released a song, “Gone, just like that…” It’s something I recorded a few years back that I recently found on a hard drive. The song is an improvised duet with myself. It was recorded at 24 bit 96k and my old system computer wasn’t able to reopen the project after it was recorded, go figure. After listening to it,  realized after listening to it pretty much summed up feelings with the nonsense going in my country right now. People disappearing, rights eroding, the whole deal.

It also summed up some feelings I have in regards to music. To certain degree music is currently going through somewhat of a dumbification. There are thousands of lesson sites online, which is seems harmless and might even seem like a good thing at first. The problem is all of this contributes to a culture of collection information for the sake of collecting information.

There also happens to be this somewhat hard right shift to being conservative in music also. Don’t get me wrong, I wholeheartedly agree that you need to understand the history or whatever kind of music you maybe creating. For example if your goal is to play modern jazz, or any music, you really need to be able to understand and play the styles that came before you authentically. It’s all part of understanding the history of what we do and it provides validity to what you do. However, it doesn’t mean to regurgitate what was done 100 years ago over and over. Part of the purpose in studying what came before you in music, probably the sole deeper meaning behind the process is to find your own way.

The straight definition of music is organized sound, that’s it. There are no barriers, no restrictions, no nothing that it needs to be other than that. I also think we should record, and perform music fearlessly without placing restraints on ourselves brought on by the beliefs of others. I guess what I’m saying is that we should be constantly pushing forward and searching for fertile ground, whatever that maybe and wherever it leads us. The only restriction for myself is music needs to be 100% performed and created by a human.
